What is Helichrysum?

Helichrysum is a genus of flowering plants that are native to Asia and the Mediterranean. There are about 600 varieties or species of this plant. The essential oils are extracted from the flowers using a steam distilled method. A couple of the common varieties often used for its cosmetic or medicinal purposed include helichrysum italicum and helichrysum microphyllum.

The plant has been used around the world to treat various conditions. For example, in certain African tribes, helichrysum has been used to treat cough, fever, and heal wounds. Although not every claim is scientifically backed, helichrysum has been researched, and certain studies have indicated benefits.

One of the great things about using products that contain helichrysum is that it provides natural pain relief without the side effects of pain medication, such as ibuprofen. Helichrysum may provide pain relief for various types of pain whether it involves the muscles, ligaments, or tendons.

What are the Benefits of Helichrysum?

Helichrysum can be used as a natural treatment for several conditions. Helichrysum essential oil can be inhaled, which may provide certain benefits. More commonly, it is applied topically undiluted onto the skin. It is also an ingredient in some topical products. When applied topically, some of the possible benefits of using helichrysum include the following:

#1) Decreases Muscle Tightness and Pain

Whether you spend too much time hunched over your computer or you’re on your feet all day, almost everyone develops tight or sore muscles at least occasionally. Muscle relaxants and pain medication can have unpleasant systemic side effects. Pain relief creams containing helichrysum may be a great alternative to reduce discomfort naturally.

#2) Promotes Cell Regeneration

Products containing helichrysum may decrease the appearance of blemishes and scars. Helichrysum may also speed healing by stimulating the production of collagen. Collagen is one of the main proteins found in connective tissue and skin. Collagen naturally decreases with exposure to ultraviolet rays and due to aging. As collagen decreases, the skin loses some of its elasticity and wrinkles can develop. Products, such as skin creams that contain helichrysum may promote the regeneration of skin cells.

#3) Decreases Inflammation

Helichrysum is also thought to decrease inflammation. Research published in the Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmacology indicated that helichrysum italicum may reduce inflammation by inhibiting certain inflammatory enzymes.

Some studies have found that helichrysum may work the same way as corticosteroids. Additional research is needed to determine if helichrysum decreases inflammation as effectivity as steroids. But helichrysum does not have the same side effects as corticosteroids, which may make it an effective option for some people with skin inflammation.

Because of its anti-inflammatory effects, products containing helichrysum, such as skin creams and sports pain relief creams, may help treat a variety of conditions, such as joint pain, eczema, and sore muscles. Regardless of the cause, helichrysum may decrease pain, swelling, and redness due to inflammation.

#4) Contains Antimicrobial Properties

Helichrysum also may provide protection against certain types of bacteria. In a study published in the International Journal of Antimicrobial Agents, results indicated that helichrysum italicum inhibited the growth of Staphylococcus aureus, which is a gram-positive bacterium. Helichrysum decreased enzymes produced by the bacteria and overall growth of the bacterium. The antimicrobial properties in helichrysum make it a good choice to put on wounds to prevent infection.

#5) Promotes Relaxation

Another great benefit of helichrysum is it promotes relaxation. In a study published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, the effectiveness of a mixture of essential oils including helichrysum, basil, and peppermint on fatigue and burnout were studied. The results indicated that the oils can be useful in promoting relaxation. Although the study involved inhaling the essential oils, topical use is also likely to ease stress.

#6) Moisturizes the Skin

One of the cosmetic benefits of helichrysum is it moisturizes the skin and makes it soft. Keeping the skin well-hydrated is important for healthy skin. Without proper moisturizing, the skin can look dull, dry, and become itchy. Dry skin may also make some conditions worse, such as acne or eczema.

Considerations for Using Helichrysum

Products containing helichrysum or helichrysum essential oil are considered safe for most people. Applying helichrysum topically to the skin does not have any known side effects. In most cases, helichrysum is non-irritating to the skin.
