Butternut Squash is Food for Healthy Joints!

butternut-squash-health-benefitsSince it is fall, you may notice that butternut squash is in wide abundance at your grocery store. If you are trying to figure out what to make for dinner, you should pick up a butternut squash, especially if you are looking for food that is good for the health of your joints.

Butternut squash has more Vitamin A than all other squash, even pumpkin. For this reason, if you have arthritis or have suffered a recent joint injury, it would be a great food to include in your diet because Vitamin A plays an important role in stimulating the growth of cell structures throughout the body. Studies have also shown that vitamin A can assist with the production of cartilage.

When most people think of vitamin A, they most likely think of the benefits that it has for their vision. But, the body uses Vitamin A for so much more, including the health of your cartilage.

This isn’t the only nutritious element of butternut squash; it also contains ample amounts of Vitamin C, Potassium, B vitamins, iron, zinc, copper, and calcium. All of these vitamins and minerals help improve the health of muscles, bones, and cartilage, as well as healthy nerve and immune functioning.  (Click Here to continue reading and to learn an effortless way to cook butternut squash!)

Is a Vitamin D Deficiency Causing Your Pain?

chronic-pain-and-vitamin-dDo you suffer from chronic pain? Did you know that doctors have found that a Vitamin D deficiency is causing many individuals to suffer from body aches and pains? In 2005, the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey discovered that 2/3s of Americans were not receiving enough Vitamin D. Some researchers have concluded that Vitamin D helps relieve pain by aiding in the absorption of calcium, which aids in bone repair and growth. Another recent study showed that “93% of 150 people with unexplained sources of pain were recently found to be deficient in Vitamin D levels.”

According to some doctors, those who come into their office to discuss the aches and pains that they feel in their bones often end up being misdiagnosed with fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue syndrome.

You may be wondering how to figure out if you are deficient in Vitamin D.  (Click Here to Continue Reading)

Rebuild Cartilage with the Right Foods!

food-can-rebuild-cartilageDid you know that you can eat certain foods to give your body the nutrients that it needs to rebuild cartilage? This is great news because cartilage is very crucial in order to prevent arthritis and other types of joint pain. For the joints, cartilage is a shock-absorbing pad that reduces friction and prevents the bones from rubbing against each other. Without sufficient cartilage in the joints, the bones will eventually cause enough damage to result in joint pain and inflammation. Over time, this will inhibit the ability to move the affected body part and can be a very painful condition.

By knowing the types of nutrients that the body needs to produce tissue fibers of cartilage, you can begin to nurture the joints.
When it comes to nutrients to rebuild cartilage look for Iron, Copper, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, and Vitamin B3.

Whole Grains: Healthy Alternatives to Reduce Inflammation

healthy-whole-grain-alternatives-to-wheatI am sure that you have heard that your diet has a major impact on improving your health and that it can even help you relieve inflammation and improve the symptoms of certain conditions like Arthritis, Fibromyalgia, Rheumatoid Arthritis, and Chronic Pain.

Often, when people tell you about foods to avoid, you will hear that you should stay away from refined grains. This is because refined grains have been processed to give them a longer shelf life. As a result of this process, most of the beneficial fibers and nutrients are removed from the grain.

Many researchers believe that wheat and wheat flour are causing problems for people’s body, especially when it comes to blood sugar and inflammation. This is because wheat causes the blood sugar to spike, which causes a chemical reaction in the body that leads to inflammatory diseases like arthritis and heart disease. Many people also find out that they are allergic to gluten, which has a host of uncomfortable symptoms.

Studies have found that the average American consumes 10 servings of refined grains every day. Because of this daunting fact, many nutritionists and health professionals urge people to look for whole grain alternatives to wheat and other gluten containing grains.      (Click Here) to Continue Reading

How Does Stress Affect My Chronic Pain?

how-does-stress-affect-chronic-painWhen we stress, our heart rate goes up, our blood pressure rises, our muscles tense up and contract, and our breathing becomes fast and erratic. To cause these physical reactions, our body releases hormones: Adrenaline, Norepinephrine, and Cortisol.

The reactions that these chemicals cause are amazing in times of fear and when you need to react to survive. For instance, in the event that you need to run away from a bear, the reactions that these stress hormones cause may save your life. However, it is not healthy for your body to deal with these chemicals all the time.

But, in today's world, it is not easy to prevent this from occuring because much of our fear and worry occurs when we sit down to pay bills, deal with a controversy, or try to finish a work project; it can be difficult to keep from constantly stressing.

Some research has shown that even the process of thinking about stressful things, or a stressful event, almost immediately increases tension in the back muscles. This often aggravates any underlying conditions causing your chronic pain.

Avoiding Injuries

preventing-injuries-solid-goldWell known Renaissance man and humanist, Desiderius Erasmus, is famous for his views on prevention of disease being better than the cure. Exactly how to do this seems surrounded in mystery, but everyday life presents opportunities in doing so. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (and the National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey), more than 100,000 people die from unintentional injuries (don’t ask me how they calculate “intentional” injuries), and 1 out of 4 older adults will experience some sort of fall that leads to injury. One out of a thousand of these injuries eventually leads to death.

The Answer?

With a little bit of knowledge and attention, there’s a key to dodging these injuries. Proper attention to the way you utilize your muscles and a little insight on your body’s kinesthetics may keep you out of harm’s way. However, there’s more to consider than simply “trying to be careful.” Let’s take a look at what strategies the best physicians consider crucial in preventing injuries. (Continue Reading)
