rooibos-teaIn the world of healthy beverages, there’s a new kid in town. Rooibos Tea (pronounced “Roy-boss”) has been around a while, but the facts about its legendary benefits are fairly recent. Why are experts dubbing this tea the king of all healthy potables? For starters, researchers have detected 50 times more antioxidants in Rooibos Tea than in Green Tea (more on why that’s a good thing later in the reading). Rooibos Tea is also filled with Vitamin C and other essential minerals that help with a number of conditions and promote health in numerous areas of the body. But where did Rooibos Tea come from? You can only find it from the leaves of the Aspalathus Linearis in Cape of Good Hope, South Africa. Locals have been drinking the tea for centuries, but heavy commercial trade only began in the early 20th century.

So what’s the big deal about Rooibos? Researchers have claimed that this special tea can eliminate symptoms of various disorders. Disorders such as bone disease, digestive issues, skin problems, migraines, cramps, allergies, and various types of conditions involving inflammation in the muscles and bones.

So let’s start with all those antioxidants. What are they and why are they important? Simply speaking, there are these certain molecules in our bodies that want to do damage to our cells; damage that can eventually lead to various types of cancer. One of the duties of anti-oxidants, is to beat up the free radicals on the playground after school. They stop the free radicals by interacting with them and breaking the chain of damage they cause.

No bones about it, Rooibos Tea may not only keep the bones healthy, but also increase mass in the bones. Rooibos contains manganese, calcium, and fluoride, and research has shown Rooibos has the ability to strengthen bones by stimulating osteoblast activity. Osteoblasts are cells that create bone mass, the more of these cells, the higher chance that your bones become stronger and more dense. Rooibos also contains 2 specific flavonoids called arientin and luteolin. These two create mineral content in the bones, and even though they are common in almost every other type of tea, Rooibos contains no caffeine. This means you can drink as much as you like, without impeding your sleep.  

Rooibos also contains a high number of polyphenols. Polyphenols are organic chemicals that also work like antioxidants, seeking out free radicals and putting the hurt on them. Polyphenols are also acclaimed for their anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and anti-mutagenic abilities. Aspalathin and nothofagin are also found in Rooibos Tea; two other types of antioxidants that help stop free radicals and thwart cell damage.

How to Brew the Roo

Hot or cold, it’s up to you. People love it both ways, but brewing Rooibos should take a little longer than other teas if you are brewing your own. You can find it in tea bags, but roughly 1tsp makes 8 oz. Some find that brewing your own is often best with a tablespoon of tea leaves in an infuser, with hot water poured over it. Let it steep for 10-15 minutes. Rooibos is naturally sweet on its own, but feel free to add some honey or another sweetener if you like.
