Many people that experience restless leg syndrome find that movement is one of the best ways to find relief. If you have RLS, you may have already found this to be true from your own experience. It can be as simple as getting up to walk around for a few minutes or getting up to stretch your legs.
Unfortunately, this is one of the reasons that restless leg syndrome can be so disruptive to a person’s sleep. If you feel the need to continually get up and move your legs or stretch, you are not going to be able to sleep. However, it can provide relief when RLS prevents you from relaxing late in the day.
While movement can be good for providing relief in the middle of an attack, it is also something that should be considered as a preventative measure. You may find that you spend a lot of time at your desk when you are at work or you may spend many hours in a vehicle. In these situations, you should try to find opportunities to stop what you are doing and move around.
If you are seated for more than an hour, you should get up to stretch your legs. If you are in the middle of a long car ride, find somewhere to stop so you can walk around for a few minutes. Long periods of staying in the same position increase the chances of an RLS attack later in the day, so you need to provide your legs with regular movement.
